Ashington FC: January Update

It’s been a few weeks now since the teams have been able to play but they certainly came back into the New Year with some exciting football. After a well-earned break Ashington FC are back in action and we’re here to give you the first update of the year.

Despite some cancelled games over the Christmas period the girls were pleased to be back out on the football pitch.

U12

The U12 team put their all into an action packed game against Hooe Martlets on the 14th Jan. The game was certainly entertaining with end to end action, a penalty and a last minute goal from Ashington to equal the scores.

Following on from their exciting first game of the New Year the girls continued their brilliant performance in the next two matches (21st & 28th Jan). The team had clean sheets in both games with credit going to the goalkeeper for her increasing skills and for giving the whole team the courage to ‘build from the back’.

The team have improved massively and are said to be unrecognisable from a few months ago. The improvements have come from controlling the ball, fantastic passing and improved goal scoring. The energy and joy amongst the team has been brilliant to watch.

There are just six more league matches to go and the club are always looking for new players in time for their new season in September 2024.

U14

The U14 Girls pulled off a remarkable 3-1 win against Premier League Newhaven in the U14 Challenge Cup to progress to the quarter finals where they will face Premiership team Oakwood.

As well as an incredible win in the U14 challenge cup, they’re also having a fantastic season. After being unbeaten since September their game on Sunday 21st brought a rare draw for the team. It was a goalless game well into the second half when a flurry of goals in 15 minutes saw the scores go 0-1, 1-1, 2-1 and a final goal from Ashington equaling the score at 2-2 just before the final whistle.

On Sunday 28th the girls put in an outstanding performance against then league leaders Little Common. It was goals galore from Ashington with every player contributing to the result. It was a clean sheet until the second half with a 5-0 score at the break. The game ended with the final score being 7-2, a fantastic win for the U14s.

After their games the past couple of weeks the team now move back into 2nd place in the league but with many more games still to play.

Ashington Swifts

The Ashington Swifts have embarked on a new venture having entered a 5 a side league with weekly regular matches. Last Wednesday was their first game and the team could certainly hold their own. At half time the scores were 1-1 but the second half just didn’t seem to go their way with the opposition scoring many goals to get ahead. Despite a great final five minutes and Ashington getting one goal it unfortunately just wasn’t enough.

Despite the result it’s been a great challenge and enormous fun for the team and has allowed them to play more football. The Friday sessions are remaining popular for the Ashington Swifts with 10 minute warm ups, 20 minute skills n drill followed by a little match. It’s great for those wanting to try football for the first time or for those returning after a long break.

Overall, it’s been a great start to the second half of the season and we’re looking forward to how all the teams get on over the next few months.
